Welcome to Asago City Nature Conservation Center

Located in the mountains of central Hyogo, our center is dedicated to the research and conservation of the Japanese Giant Salamander (Hanzaki) — one of the world’s largest amphibians and a National Special Natural Monument of Japan. We invite you to discover the rich nature of Asago and the fascinating world of this remarkable creature.

About

Asago City sits at the watershed of two of Hyogo’s major rivers — the Ichikawa, flowing to the Seto Inland Sea, and the Maruyama, flowing to the Sea of Japan. Its clear, mountain-fed headwaters form one of Japan’s finest habitats for the Japanese Giant Salamander.

The Japanese Giant Salamander (Hanzaki) is one of the world’s largest amphibians, growing up to about 150 cm in length. Endemic to Japan and virtually unchanged for over 23 million years, it is often called a “living fossil.” It was designated a National Special Natural Monument in 1952.

At our center, researchers work to better understand this remarkable species and protect the rivers it depends on. From the headwaters of Asago, we share a vision of harmony between people and nature.
